Play Centre / Kinder

Play Centre is a space for toddlers between 2 and 3 years old where they enjoy participating in different activities that introduce them to life in school. Nursery is our first grade of kindergarten, for children 3 to 4 years old. Reception is our second grade of kindergarten before they start their primary education. In Reception we receive children from 4 to 5 years old.

Our principal aim in Kindergarten is the development of the whole child. Our programmes have been designed so that at the end of Reception children are socially integrated, understand the importance of friendship, are honest and open, support each other, show confidence in themselves, are tolerant of others and understand that they have both rights and responsibilities.

Of equal importance is the development of physical skills. We work to ensure that children develop coordination, rhythm, team skills and balance. Children learn to control movements that include force, resistance and flexibility through the use of objects and equipment. This work in 3 dimensions helps children to solve problems and reason effectively.

Developing a basis for the academic work later in their school career is also a key part of Kinder education. Students take the first steps in a co-ordinated language development programme that includes phonics and sight reading. They learn to create, dictate and write short texts and make comments and contributions that facilitate group work on texts. This initial work is used as a basis for experimentation in language and the development of a wider effective vocabulary.

During Kinder, students are introduced to mathematical concepts in both English and Spanish. By the end of their Reception year they should be counting up to 50, working in series of 3 or more, using one to one correspondence up to 30, grouping in tens, beginning to add and subtract and using numbers in a variety of situations. This is not a mechanical numerical process but the creation of strong number and spatial concepts.

In Kinder we follow the SEP programmes alongside the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.
